Description

This is a British Naval sword of the 18th Century. A similar sword is shown in “Swords and Blades of the American Revolution” by George Neumann, pg 107. The brass pommel has an anchor engraved on the front. The grip is of a dark wood with deeply cut spiral groove. The 29 inch x 1 ¾ inch blade has a single broad fuller. The sword is 35 inches overall. The four slot brass guard has fluting on the knuckle bow and the quillon. There is a break at the center branch of the guard. This is a rare sword to find being definitely identified to the navy. I have owned in the past two other identical ones, but with a white brass guard. This sword was exhibited at the Constitution Museum during the bicentennial.
