Description

This saber was adapted in 1840 from the French pattern for the light artillery. It was manufactured by Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee, Mass. The sword has a single-edged curved blade. There is a broad fuller that runs from the ricasso to within 6 inches of the point. The obverse side of the ricasso is stamped “1863 D.R.”. The reverse side is marked “Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee, Mass”. Only “Chicopee, Mass” is visible. The grip is wood carved with leather and wound with twisted wire. The brass hilt and pommel have a wonderful old patina. The scabbard is iron with a beautiful old patina. The blade has a nice smooth surface with scattered areas of graying. There were only 2,513 of these made.
