Description

Extremely rare child’s small-sword marked “GW” with * above letters. The touchmark “GW” is an unrecorded silversmith. There is a nearly identical child’s small-sword in the book “Silver Mounted Swords” by Daniel D. Hartzler, pg 94. Forthcoming book by Dan Hartzler will identify this silversmith. An early 18th century painting at Colonial Williamsburg of a colonial American group visiting England shows a young child wearing a silver small-sword. The petite sword is photographed with the full size “GW” sword for comparison. The overall length is 24 ¼ inches and the blade is 19 ¼ inches. The 5 inch hilt is constructed of coin silver with silver wire wrap on the grips terminating with turks-head ferrels. The blade is triangular and is 5/8 inches wide at the ricasso. The sword is as found in excellent condition with some minor surface rust on the blade. Refer to our other silver hilt sword on our website.
