Description
MAJOR HENRY SUESS CIVIL WAR MEMORIAL This is an unusually nice memorial executed in oil on silk over canvas. The image size is 25 inches x 30 inches. The memorial shows war trophies, insignias of the Civil War and the Missouri Coat of Arms in the center and the 7th Cavalry Insignia and Flags and the 7th Missouri Cavalry Flags. It also includes in writing all of his wartime services. He fought against the two great Confederate generals during the Civil War, Gen. Sterling Price and Gen. Joseph Shelby. The service is too long to list but can be read in the photograph. Some of his biographical history can be obtained from the internet under "Portrait & Biographical Records, Denver & Vicinity".
The painting is extremely bright and clear with beautiful vivid colors and detail. The canvas has four small damaged areas, the largest being less than one quarter inch. The frame is missing parts of the decoration and gold leafing as can be seen in the photographs. The overall size of the frame is 31 inches x 36 inches.
Henry Suess came from a military family from Hesse Cassel, Germany. This is the area that many mercenary soldiers were hired by King George III to fight in the American Revolution. Major Henry Suess applied for US citizenship in 1862 and in the photographs you can see documents pertaining to his passport, his election certificate for the House of Representatives in the State of Colorado. The other photograph contains Hesse Cassel documents before his arrival in the US.
