Description
This is an early bronze lantaka, probably from the 18th century. It has a beautiful uncleaned old patina and is in excellent condition. There is a lot of information available on the use of the lantaka. Basically they were used as swivel deck guns to ward off pirates on merchant vessels travelling to the east. I have seen lantakas nearly 10 ft long at the museum in Istanbul. This cannon measures 50 ¾ inches overall including the tiller and is 42 inches long without the tiller.
The flare at the breech and muzzle measures 4 ½ inches and the bore is approximately 1 ¼ inches. The trunions are below the center line and the swivel yoke is enclosed indicating an early date. It comes fitted with a 19th century mahogany base. A lot of the earlier guns were made in the Netherlands and Portugal.
