Description

This rig is identified to Captain William Smith and consists of his ammunition box, fusil bayonet and sheath, belt and belt plate.

The ammunition box is 9 inches x 3 inches x 3 inches with a 4 ½ inch flap. The box is embossed decorated with a flowing leaf design on the flap. The flap contains an eight-pointed star. The box was originally rigged for an over the shoulder belt and still has one of the leather buttons remaining for attachment. The wooden block carries twenty four rounds of ammunition. They measure approximately 65 cal. One small piece of leather is missing on the flap from being worn next to the bayonet sheath.

The belt has an early War of 1812 high grade belt plate. The plate measures 2 ½ inches x 2 ¾ inches and the belt is 1 ¾ inches red Moroccan leather in excellent condition.

The bayonet frog is also made of red Moroccan leather and houses a one piece eagle button with an “A” in the shield. The bayonet is a fusil size bayonet.
The bayonet frog has the inscription “Wm. Smith” with what appears to be in front of the name, LT2. Wm Smith served in the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 married Abigail Adams, daughter of John Quincy Adams. A quick check on War of 1812 roster showed Wm Smith Artillery 1813.

The ammo box and bayonet have been removed from the belt for handling and photographing.
