Description

Rare and possibly unique pewter officer's food service bowl from the HMF Medusa. The bowl is 8 inches in dia. with a 1 inch rim and is 2.5 inches high. H M F M E D U S A is stamped on the rim with 4 broad arrows to denote British Government Property. The rim is decorated with a pair of double engrailed lines and has a raised foot. In the past I have owned several plates and bowls marked with the broad arrow but it is rare to have the ship's name marked on the item. HMF Medusa was Lord Nelson's flag ship and was launched in 1801. She was a 32 gun frigate of the Royal Navy and served in the Napoleonic wars with a long and extensive record. The bowl is in excellent condition with only minor discoloration and has no sign of a maker's mark. Probably of English manufacture. Authenticity guaranteed as represented by William Dykes Antiques, Wiscasset, Maine.
