Description

RARITAN, American ship, Peter Hanson, Master, leaving the port of Naples, February, 1853. Gouache, image size 21 inches x 30 inches. Signed: Michele Funno P. This is an exceptionally nice example of Michele Funno’ s ship paintings. It is in excellent condition with no staining or damage. The painting is in the original frame and measures 27 inches x 36 ½ inches. In the Peabody Museum there are four examples of his work, of which only one is an American ship and signed by Michele Funno. The RARITAN was built in 1843 in Kingston, Mass., 494 tons. Records indicate a ship RARITAN was burned in Norfolk, Va. by union forces at the outbreak of the Civil War to avoid capture by confederates. This painting was sold by Vose Galleries of Boston, in the 1950’s and their label is affixed to the back. This is one of the oldest established galleries in Boston, dating back to 1841.
